NPTCDI Program Overview

Overview

Northern Plains Tribal Cancer Data Initiative

(NPTCDI)

In September 2007, the Aberdeen Area Tribal Chairmen’s Health Board (AATCHB)’s Northern Plains Tribal Epidemiology Center (NPTEC) received a grant from Office of Minority Health, the United States Department of Health and Human Services to implement the Northern Plains Tribal Cancer Data Improvement Initiative (NPTCDI).  This program is researching the cancer disparities among Northern Plains American Indian communities by improving the quality, accessibility, and usability of cancer data.

The four goals of this program are:

  1. Develop alliances and partnerships in order to improve the coordination and alignment of cancer data collection, management, dissemination and utilization.
  2. Increase the use of available data to identify high priority cancer health status objectives and services needed to achieve such objectives.
  3. Enhance the current system for more effective cancer data collection, management, and use.
  4. Ensure a sound management of the project.

How we implement this program:

·     The Tribal Oversight Committee, comprising of leaders of Native American communities, provides the guidance to ensure that the program is implemented in a way that respects the unique cultural heritage of Northern Plains Native communities.

·     The Data Workgroup, comprising of representatives from Native American communities and experts on cancer data, provides input on planning and implementation of project activities and gives technical assistance.

Year 1 Accomplishments:

·     Formation of Tribal Oversight Committee and Cancer Data Workgroup

·     Analysis of 10-year Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance (BRFSS) data to examine patterns and trend of cancer risk factors and screening use among Northern Plains Native Americans
